Willner and Trilling: Mr. and Myths
A husband-and-wife duet featuring woodwork and fairy-tale fantasy
November 11 - 26, 2023
On Saturday, November 11, from 4 to 6 p.m., a reception at Wired Gallery opens “Willner and Trilling: Mr. and Myths,” an exhibition of recent works by woodworker Andrew Willner and painter JoEllen Trilling. The husband-and-wife artists are based in Rosendale, NY.

ANDREW WILLNER

Andrew has been a sculptor, furniture designer, boat builder, city planner, environmentalist, permaculturist, transition advocate, storyteller, public speaker, and blogger. He is a leader, organizer, and advocate for the New York/New Jersey Bioregion and was an early proponent of the Waterkeeper model of water and habitat protection as the founder of NY/NJ Baykeeper.

Andrew is The Executive Director of The Center for Post Carbon Logistics, and an instructor at the Wooden Boat School of the Hudson River Maritime Museum.

JO-ELLEN TRILLING

Trilling’s sculptures fashioned from cloth, wire, and other materials are found in the private collections of prominent individuals such as Elton John, Carrie Fisher, Billy Crystal, David Letterman, Robin Williams, and Madonna, just to name a few.

Her painting career began in 2001, and her first exhibition devoted to her oils in New York City took place in 2008.

JoEllen’s statement on creating this art:

In this time fraught with fears

(they are visceral)

innocence

of earth and animals

turning frightful thoughts

into fables

turning the tables

gravity to levity

fragments combined

answer a story by asking a question

fierce creatures of myth

tamed.

hell into home

heaven renamed

PLAYING WITH WIRE
The Art of Suzanne Parker
October 21 - November 5, 2023
PLAYING WITH WIRE is an exhibition featuring a selection of works by Woodstock-based artist Suzanne Parker.

After 11 years in existence, it is grand time for Wired Gallery to show an artist who puts "wire" as a central element in her art. Having zig zagged between painting and sculpture, Suzanne has always felt something was missing when working flat. Then she discovered CAT3 wire, in all its vibrant colors and malleability, and it was love at first sight. It allowed her to add an extra dimension and texture to both her abstract and representational work.

Not everything in her show incorporates wire but most of it does.

"Three themes have played throughout my life," says Suzanne, "and they all inform my work: humor, process, and food.  I use humor to cope with adversity to make social connections, especially in my representational work. Process, because I love to play with new materials and techniques, mixing and matching and pushing the boundaries of how they can be used. And food? Well, if there is an opportunity to include food, I'll never pass it up. I used to be a food writer and restaurant reviewer before I retired in 2017."

DIVERSITY

A selection of works by the Women Photographers Collective of the Hudson Valley

September 2 - October 15, 2023
Artist Reception: Saturday, September 2, 5-7PM

On Saturday, September 2, a reception from 5-7PM at Wired Gallery will open “DIVERSITY," an exhibition featuring a selection of works by the members of The Women Photographers Collective of the Hudson Valley.

The exhibition, curated by Wired Gallery owner Sevan Melikyan, will be up September 2 - October 15.

Wired Gallery is located at 11 Mohonk Road in High Falls. Hours are Saturday and Sunday 11-4.

“DIVERSITY” will include the work of: Gail Albert, Joan Barker, Ana Bergen, Karen Davis, Nancy Donskoj, Jill Enfield, Lori Grinker, Maria Fernanda Hubeaut, Susan Keiser, Kay Kenny, Dorothea Marcus, Dana Matthews, Susan Phillips, Carla Schapiro, and Ruth Wetzel.

“DIVERSITY" aims at introducing this relatively new group of women photographers to the general public, through a selection of works free of any thread to tie them. I made my selections thinking what best this group has to offer and why it deserves everyone’s attention. The Collective gathers powerful voices, whose members express themselves at times in radically different styles, and that’s exactly what this show aims to capture,” says Sevan Melikyan, curator of the show.

"It's fascinating to observe the synergy of a diverse group of artists, who range from street photographers, to alternative process practitioners, and abstract image makers. Professors, journalists and fine artists all enjoy the camaraderie and professional support," commented Kay Kenny, group facilitator.

WOMEN PHOTOGRAPHERS COLLECTIVE OF THE HUDSON VALLEY

Women Photographers Collective of the mid- Hudson Valley is a membership organization which promotes community building, networking, mentorship, and opportunities for presenting and exhibiting work. Our women-identified members range from documentary to fine art photographers, from established professionals to newly emerging artists. The growing Women Photographers Collective was formed in early 2020 as a way for Hudson Valley women photographers to network and support each other in their creative work, especially to counteract the isolation and disconnectedness of the pandemic. Artist-Writer-Teacher Kay Kenny, whose studio is in Saugerties NY, initiated the group and is its primary facilitator.

Tarryl Gabel: SERENITY NOW

EXTENDED UNTIL AUGUST 27, 2023

Artist Reception: Saturday, July 1, 5-7PM at Wired Gallery

Serenity Now!
Almost every comment or compliment Tarryl gets about her oil paintings are how peaceful, serene and calming they are. Plein air painting is her "happy place" and she is grateful that doing what she loves makes so many others happy.
"My goal is to share the peace, beauty and reverence that I experience," says Tarryl. "I strive to make this emotional connection with the viewer through my art. I am most driven to capture that fleeting moment in time and the way the light moves across the changing landscape."

TARRY GABEL
Tarryl Gabel was born and raised on a cattle ranch on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota.  She has lived the last thirty plus years in the beautiful Hudson Valley in New York.  Tarryl prefers to paint plein air whenever possible, but also paints still life, wildlife and western themed paintings when she cannot be outdoors. She is proud to have been voted by readers of the Hudson Valley Magazine, as “Best Artist” in their annual “Best of the Hudson Valley” five times to date. She has won awards regionally as well as being a winner in numerous National Competitions including Paint the Parks and Paint America Top 100. Tarryl recently was given an award titled: “Worthy of the Met” from judge David C. Levy at Plein Air Easton, the largest and most prestigious plein air event in the Country.  Her work is in many private and corporate collections nationally and abroad.

ANCESTRAL
By Elisa Pritzker

May 27 - June 25, 2023
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 27, 3-6PM
My art is eco-ancestral, intuitive, universally primal and my iconography points towards the mysteries of life. It all began with a pivotal trip to Patagonia when I had a magical encounter with the original Selk’nam people and their positive shamanic daily traditions, cosmology, body art painting -all in consonance with the natural environment. My telling is “to look back to look forward”.

BETH SHOENFELD

Textured Connections
May 6 - 21, 2023
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 6, 3-5PM

On Saturday, May 6, a reception from 3-5PM will open Wired Gallery’s 2023-2024 season with “Textured Connections,” a solo show of mixed-media works by Beth Shoenfeld. The show will close on Sunday, May 21.

Beth is a mixed media artist and ceramics instructor living here in the Hudson Valley.  Born in the Bronx and raised in the metropolitan area of New Jersey. Beth has been living and creating art in the Kingston area since the late 1980s.

Beth makes her art by “pushing and pulling clay, paper, paint and glue, or whatever the materials are. She layers, rips and rebuilds elements from one piece to the next.” The result is often richly textured, intimate compositions full of small details and pasted imagery that wonders and intrigues.

January of this year while creating a large volume of new mixed media works and ceramic jewelry, Beth began teaching ceramics at Cornell creative arts and business center in Kingston N.Y. “I have been blessed with amazing art teachers throughout my life.  They instilled in me a desire and passion to show up and create, and now that I am teaching, I have the opportunity to give back.”

RAUL SERRANO
Split Vision
November 26, 2022 - April 30, 2023
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 26, 3-5PM

Kerhonkson-based Raul Serrano uses an inventive visual language that seeks mystery, poetry and a constant shift of meaning through compositions that recall Renaissance, surrealist, and post-impressionist art.  The viewer is pulled toward dreamscapes, intense juxtapositions of incongruous objects against or within crowds and flows of bodies, human and animal. Uses of color and form create Kafkaesque challenges to the psyche, calling for visceral reaction or focused reflection, qualities often found in great art.

MARILYN PERRY
Fluidity
October 15 - 23, 2022
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 15, 5-7PM
Wired Gallery presents Fluidity, a new exhibit featuring paintings by Gardiner-based artist Marilyn Perry.

“I like to try to capture the uncapturable in nature,” says Marylyn Perry, who uses acrylic and encaustic paints to produce her semi-abstract pictures. “I look at landscapes that constantly change and can hardly be photographed. Incoming tides twinkling with moonlight; rushing water that never stands still; dense fog sweeping over headland, icy snowstorms; fiery lava slipping down a hillside; autumn sunshine that blazes for bare seconds. Not many artists have well captured the evanescence of the elements.”

After leading such prestigious institutions as the Kress Foundation and World Monuments Fund, and spending years in Venice, Rome, Florence, and London as a historian of Renaissance art, she was past 60 when the artist in her finally emerged.

Marilyn is self-taught. She sees her art as a play with paint on canvas. She pours, scrapes, and pushes paint around with palette knives, fingers, and other unconventional tools. Painting for her is a “dance that flows and is all about movement.”

BARRY MAYO
Races and Faces (Redux)
Photographs that explore interracial relationships and portraiture
September 30 - October 9, 2022

Artist Talk: Races and Faces, Sunday, October 9, 3-5 PM moderate by Susan Farkas

Races and Faces (redux), continues Barry Mayo’s exploration of interracial relationships and portraiture that started with his 2000 exhibition "Races and Faces". This exhibit extends Mayo’s study of mixed-race relationships, cultures and issues of identity amongst biracial individuals.

The exhibit opens with an artist reception on Friday, September 30, 5:00-7:00 PM and closes on Sunday, October 9.

Artist Talk

On Sunday, October 9, 3:00-5:00 pm, there will be an Artist Talk at Wired Gallery with live audience and broadcast on Zoom with Barry Mayo . The talk will be moderated by Emmy award-winning video producer and High Falls resident Susan Farkas.

Seating is very limited and reservations are required to attend the talk in person. Please reserve at thewiredgallery@gmail.com.

To attend the Talk via Zoom, follow this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82547116549

The genesis of Mayo’s interest in race-based issues, stems from his being raised during the 60’s, observing the tail end of the Jim Crow era, combined with his experience of integrating a New York City public school in the third grade. He found himself living experientially with one foot in the Black world, and one foot in the White world. Mayo’s investigation has not only provided a means for self-exploration, but a vehicle for the ongoing study of race relations in the United States, viewed from the prism of personal relationships.

Mayo Bio

Barry Mayo's fine-art photographs focus primarily on the natural interplay of light and shadow. In many of Mayo's images, the stark contrast of both his black and white and color imagery highlights his study of social, visual and emotional juxtapositions. Through careful observation, Mayo's work results in something that is formally complex - yet his images deliver a succinct and direct assessment of his surroundings - and the imagined interior life of his subjects. His images explore racial themes, ideas around presence and absence, and cultural dilemmas found in science and faith. In the end, the photographs of Barry Mayo make the experience of the world a newly seen experience for the viewer.

After a successful 35-year career as a broadcasting programming executive, manager, and owner, Barry Mayo began exhibiting his photography in various museums and galleries, including a group exhibition at the prestigious Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. Mayo has served on the boards of numerous educational institutions including Vice-Chair of the World of Money.org, an organization teaching financial education and philanthropy to young people in the New York City metro area. He has also served as Co-President of the board for the Center for Photography at Woodstock. Mayo currently is a board member of the Reher Center in Kingston and recently joined the Advisory Board of the Dorsky Museum in New Paltz . Mayo is a father and a proud grandfather of three, a rabid Jazz fan, and a circumnavigator who makes his home in Stone Ridge in the magnificent Hudson Valley of New York State.

The show, which includes a variety of oil paintings and linocut prints, opens on Saturday, August 20, with a reception from 2PM to 4PM, and will close on Sunday, September 4.

Lora’s work is inspired by everyday moments. An animal lover, she depicts our shared experiences and relationships with the creatures around us.

While primarily a painter and a printmaker, Lora has experimented in diverse media — including fiber, wood and clay. Her clay work, more playful in nature, will also be on view at Wired Gallery.

Through all of her work the thread of her passion and style is evident in her narrative imagery drawn from dream worlds. Worlds of a kinder nature- where one has a moment of reflection to ponder life and feel in each work one’s own story.

Lora Shelley is a RISD Graduate, (BFA - Illustration ’94), Lora has been exhibiting her work both Nationally and Internationally for over 30 years.

Shelley’s work is in private collections around the globe from Africa to France, Italy, Germany and Australia.

RICH COROZINE
Paintings in the Time of Covid
July 30 - August 14, 2022
The show consists of five large paintings executed during the height of the pandemic (though unrelated to the pandemic itself).
Corozine's body of work is always personal and at times autobiographical.
This is how Corozine describes these five works:

The Bouncing Babalini's
My daughter (on horseback), son (juggling tomatoes) and me (on the concertina) in a reprise of a painting from 40 years ago (just son and me) of the same name...we are Italian

New Paltzian Man

My self as a somewhat modest New Paltz citizen (seemingly forever - and feeling kind-of Leonardo da Vinci)

Poets of the North Wood: Jim Thatcher

My friend the poet Jim Thatcher of the Maine woods

A Vigil

As a small boy a friend of mine disappeared forever and I waited outside his house for him for months (I learned later that he had died)

Where's Richie? He's Flying With the Birds

From "Where's Waldo" (the kids book), only instead of disappearing into a human crowd I much prefer to be discovered amid birds (or fish, gorillas, elephants etc.).

Meet and Greet Rich Corozine: Saturday, July 30, 2-4 PM.

May 28 - June 12, 2022

The Hurley-based Jennifer Leighton is a self-taught abstract artist who experienced a "metamorphosis" in 2002 when "acrylic paint and collage on large surfaces grew wild and colorful. Her use of line emphasized strongly contrasted color fields. Movement and countermovement began to add tension and move in relation together." Since 2009, she has looked to Kandinsky, Baziotes, Elizabeth Murray and Flora Crockett among others to further explore line and its ability to invigorate the picture plane.
Her mentors are abstract artist Lynn Preston and Woodstock School of Art teacher Meredith Rosier.

December 4 - 19, 2021

For over twenty years, Woodstock-based Mernin has been translating the intensity and passion of a life fully lived into radical color-scapes. A self-taught painter, Mernin credits his experiences as a young, broke traveler as ultimately being the source of his greatest teachings, feeling that is only through radical authenticity, humility, and fearlessness in facing the unknown that the spontaneous creative act is achieved.

His work, characterized by striking balance energetic, gestural lines, and emotional rawness, has been featured in numerous galleries across the Hudson Valley and is included in many private collections.

RAUL SERRANO
Timeline
October 23 - November 7, 2021

Raul Serrano is one of the few artists who enjoy the distinction of having exhibited solo at Wired Gallery more than once. Well that's because if there were such a thing as an "Ulster County Museum of Art," he'd be right up there.

Well, we don't have an Ulster County Museum of Art. At least, not yet. But we have Wired Gallery!

We celebrate local artists here. Artists who produce works of quality in a consistent way. If there is one thread that ties all these local artists at Wired Gallery besides being local, it's not the taste of the curator but the quality and artistry of the work shown here.

So short of going to an art museum today, come to Wired Gallery. And one thing you can't do at a museum but you can do at Wired Gallery: you can take a piece off its walls and enjoy it at home!

LOIS CAPONE
Transitions
October 2 - 17, 2021

Ms. Capone has a background in advertising and photography in NYC.  She moved to Olivebridge over 40 years ago. She has worked as a freelance artist from her home for the past 25 years exclusively to the renowned 3-D artist Charles Fazzino. About four years ago, she moved to Mt. Tremper where she found a new focus and inspiration on painting abstracts.

Like a journal, my paintings allow me to process my emotions into tangible and cathartic expression.  Pictures and images are not so much the aim as a resolution, crystallization of shape, color and marks into a whole of emotion that has resonance.  Lost in the process of painting, struggling to find a way out until exhaled with complete clarity.

Interpreting the Shimmering Natural World

September 11 - 26, 2021

Hudson Valley artist Lynne Friedman seeks beauty and the sublime in watercolor, oil and mixed media.

Friedman’s inspiration is the cycles of the natural world. Her garden is a constant source of ideas, the recognition of transience and the possibility of renewal.

In this exhibit Friedman captures the impermanence of nature at its peak utilizing plants, fruits and flowers with a love of color as a starting point to explore essence and idea through visual means.

Also featured are mixed media collages that emerged in her studio during the Covid period with the appearance of sylphs and angels that are elemental beings that inhabit the air.

"Corrigible"

August 21 - September 6, 2021

A new 1-Wall Show entitled “Corrigible" begins at Wired Gallery in High Falls on Saturday, August 21, featuring all recent paintings by New Paltz-based artist Joan Barker.

Visitors can meet Ms. Barker on Sunday, August 22nd from 1 – 4 PM.

The show runs every weekend, hours 11AM - 4PM, through Monday, September 6.

Ms. Barker’s paintings on large expanses of cardboard are from 2020 and 2021. In describing the works, Ms. Barker states, “Before I paint on cardboard, I draw with a utility knife and marker. I peel the cut surface, exposing the textured foundation. The ripped ridges create surface tension. I then scorch the open grooves, and the colors I add emphasize and conjoin the four different surfaces: cut, torn, drawn, and painted.”

Joan Barker is a Hudson Valley artist who employs both traditional and experimental methods in her painting and photography. She is the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Artists’ Fellowship, The Village Voice Photography Grant and two Center for Photography at Woodstock Fellowships. Her photographs have been featured in solo and group exhibitions including at O K Harris, NYC; Photographers’ Gallery, London; Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson, NY; and the California Museum of Photography in Riverside.

CAREY CONAWAY

Color, Shape, and Rhythm

June 19 - July 4, 2021

Carey Conaway has an innate talent with color, shape, and rhythm. It has been said that her
color and spatial sense create art that speaks and moves magically and poetically.
Geometry and color are the head and the heart of what she does.

Color, light, and space are key influences in her work. Her art provides an investigation of
color relationships and illusions specific to shape, space, and form.

Her designs are both simple and complex. The colors interplay with each other within the
geometric shapes. At times this interaction offers a potential conflict between the colors, but
by leaving this conflict unresolved, her work allows us to transcend the seeming limitations.

The result is a semblance of order and unity between colors and shapes, and thus within
ourselves.

Travis Fox: Remains to Be Seen

Photographs by Krumville-based renowned photojournalist Travis Fox.

April 17 - May 2, 2021

The show consists of eight 20”x30” photographs selected from Fox’s recently-published book Remains to Be Seen (Daylight, 2020). The images explore a disappearing but still tangible American landscape, from the Rust Belt towns of the Midwest to the Borscht Belt resorts of the Catskill Mountains. Using aerial photography, Fox finds patterns in former industrial sites and abandoned neighborhoods that would be undetectable from the ground. His pictures present a visual record of old and debilitating problems, from institutionalized racism to environmental destruction.

TRAVIS FOX is an award-winning television documentary maker, Fox’s work has appeared on PBS, National Geographic, Al Jazeera, and The New York Times. He graduated from the Missouri School of Journalism. From 1999 to 2009, he worked as a senior video journalist at The Washington Post and was widely recognized as a pioneer of news video on the web. He covered such major stories as the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the war in Afghanistan. In 2006, he won an Emmy Award for web video coverage of Hurricane Katrina on washingtonpost.com. Fox has taught broadcast journalism at the Newmark J-School and multimedia filmmaking at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

(Re) Wired One-Wall Show: Nikolette Bellochio

“Nikolette Bellocchio is a printmaker who lives in the Hudson Valley following her graduation from SUNY New Paltz. Her art focuses on capturing emotions in their physical form, in attempts to make them supralinguistic and visceral. By thinking about feelings and what they could look like, she concocts a quixotic-elixir of vivid imagery with a gluttonous color palette.

While creating, she thinks about loneliness, tenderness, love, or any emotion related to the human condition. A compilation of notes, nostalgic items, sometimes imagined places, and ambiguous lines create an imagined space that then becomes a sentimental capsule.

Driven by the inherent want to connect to others, art becomes a universal language to communicate with others, and Nikolette’s art is a determined attempt to share sentiments with her viewers.”

(Re) Wired One-Wall Show: Dion Ogust

Since 2008 Ogust has been painting and printmaking, initially studying under Kate McGloughlin, at the Woodstock School of Art. Showcased here are several of her painterly abstracted landscapes rendered in subtle earth tones occasionally enhanced with flashes of rich hue.

Ogust is also known as a freelance and staff photographer for Ulster Publishing.

(Re) Wired One-Wall Show: Kathi Robinson Frank

Born in New York City, Frank studied at the Art Students League with Will Barnet in high school and majored in art at Bard College. Her early influences were Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Rauchenberg and Larry Rivers.

In the 1990’s she began working in natural fiber and adobe, weaving large hanging nest-like structures she referred to as habitats. Then after seeing an Anselm Keifer show she began a series of three dimensional paintings using adobe, paint and natural found vegetation from her property in the Hudson Valley. These paintings formed a body of work called The Yeats Series (2009-2011).

Kathi has shown her work locally around the Hudson Valley, as well as in Provincetown and NYC. She also shows at the Casa Morada Gallery in Bucerias, Mexico where she resides part-time. She makes her home locally in Stone Ridge.

(Re) Wired One-Wall Show: Joyce Washor

Joyce spent her first ten years in Brooklyn, NY and then became a Jersey girl until graduating from Douglass College, Rutgers University. In 1997, after spending 25 years as a textile designer in NYC she made plans to devote herself to painting full time. But fate had other plans- a painting related shoulder injury required her to re evaluate her painting techniques. It seemed she had two choices: learn to paint with her left arm/hand or scale down her work in order to use her wrist instead of her shoulder. Since painting small enabled her to learn more quickly, purchase art supplies less expensively and have more opportunities to exhibit she resolved to share her experiences in book, PDF and DVD formats.
Joyce lives with her artist/chef/all round fixer-upper husband in Woodstock NY enjoying three grandchildren and teaching watercolor in her home studio.

An ongoing group show during Covid times
One-Wall Show: Johnny Mernin

For over twenty years, Woodstock-based Mernin has been translating the intensity and passion of a life fully lived into radical color-scapes. A self-taught painter, Mernin credits his experiences as a young, broke traveler as ultimately being the source of his greatest teachings, feeling that is only through radical authenticity, humility, and fearlessness in facing the unknown that the spontaneous creative act is achieved.

His work, characterized by striking balance, energetic, gestural lines, and emotional rawness, has been featured in numerous galleries across the Hudson Valley and is included in many private collections.

Before the pandemic, Wired Gallery presented exhibits every three weeks. It was not uncommon to have gatherings of up to 150 people at the openings. Times have changed.

Artists included in the (Re)Wired Group Show are:
Alix Ankele, Jane Bloodgood Abrams, Diane Boisvert, Kaete Brittin Shaw, MF Daint, Mary Anne Erickson, Josh Finn, Astrid Fitzgerald, Cristeen Gamet, Denise Giardullo, Mimi Graminski, Ken Green, Katie Grove, Laura Gurton, Ann Haaland, Jeanne Hildenbrand, Judith Hoyt, Robert Kressler, Leonie Lacouette, Mary Leary, Lynn Lynn Herring, Katherine McGuiness, John Mernin, Jerry Michalak, Joanna Murphy, Dion Ogust, Franc Palaia, John Perrella, Marlo Richards, Mitchell Saler, Thomas Sarrantonio, Prue See, Raul Serrano, Pablo Shine, Jo-Ellen Trilling, Lisa Ven Vertloh, Joyce Washor, Marlene Wiedenbaum, and Andrew Willner

Constructions from detritus, the castoff, and the neglected
Wired Gallery comes out of hibernation with a memorial exhibit dedicated to the recently deceased Chris Lawrence.

Chris filled his life-spaces with “constructions” he fashioned from his precious “detritus,” the castoff, neglected, tarnished, broken bits and pieces he collected over time, always finding beauty and delight in the mundane.

Raul Serrano: Painting as Vernacular
September 20 - September 29, 2019

Kerhonkson-based Raul Serrano uses an inventive visual language that seeks mystery, poetry and a constant shift of meaning through compositions that recall Renaissance, surrealist, and post-impressionist art.

The body of work is held together by twice-removed perceptions of leitmotifs: water, glass; metaphorical and actual "currents,” swirls of tentacled sea creatures, live wires. From behind featureless spectator figures, the viewer is pulled toward dreamscapes, intense juxtapositions of incongruous objects against or within crowds and flows of bodies, human and animal. Uses of color and form create Kafkaesque challenges to the psyche, calling for visceral reaction or focused reflection.

Side by Side
Jo-Ellen Trilling & Andrew Willner
August 3 - 25, 2019

Married for decades, Andrew Willner and Jo-Ellen Trilling share a bond of creativity. They’ve traveled on different artistic tracks, but side by side; embarked in New York City and arrived in The Hudson Valley, near Rosendale.

Trilling’s paintings and dolls exemplify Magic Realism. Appearances lure and trick with bright colors but incongruous details. Whimsical, Bosch-like hybrid creatures teeter on disturbing. Winged things cling to Grimm forest trees; a live rooster hat glares from a dog doll’s head. Disquieting toys have too-round faces, and ‘steampunk’ horses advance. Strange animals peer through Alice’s looking glass.

Nautical notes and textures pervade Willner’s woodwork: An elegant, slender ‘steamer trunk’ box; seawall posts settling unevenly in sand over time. He works utilitarian pieces into waves and swells, counter-current swirls, gentle lifts and ebbs on surfaces far from shore. Willner coopers and carves fine wood, sands to fluid flows, oils it to a rich sheen.

Wired Gallery's Makers' Show featuring 20 artists and artisans
Curated by Erin von Holdt-Gilbert
May 25 - June 23, 2019
Big or small, everything surrounding us has meaning. What we wear, the cup we drink from, the quilt we sleep under - all have an impact – in our lives and the lives of the people who made them. In an ever more mass-produced world, I’ve chosen to be conscious about where the things I bring into my life come from – to create a hand crafted home. This show encapsulates a cross section of goods by over 25 of my favorite local makers – from furniture and home goods to wearables.

The Hudson Valley region has been a mecca for artists and craftsman since the days of the Hudson River School. Come see this collection of contemporary and intentional work.

Michael Lokensgaard: Knots and Flowers
May 19 - June 3, 2018

Wired Gallery is pleased to present Michael Lokensgaard: Knots and Flowers, a solo show by the Bloomington-based artists featuring his

paintings on floral compositions as well as his more recent knot paintings and etchings.

The show marks Lokensgaard’s first solo exhibit in the Hudson Valley in nearly 30 years.

The knot paintings are a vehicle for the artist to play with intertwining forms, revealing colors that exist more in his  imagination than in reality.

His floral paintings are also arrangements of colors and forms, but applied to more familiar subjects including not only flowers, but vases, frames, tables, and so on. The result is a series of technically accomplished works expressing the character, personality, and frantic growth of familiar flowering plants.

MARIE MASTRONARDO: A RETROSPECTIVE
A solo show of ceramic sculpture surveying the artist's 50-year career
October 28 - November 26, 2017

“Mastronardo’s figures seem to...float upward. Fragments of breast, a shoulder, a thigh, gradually free themselves from the clay form... Some of the figures are more stylized, but, seen in the context of all her work, they all flow in the same direction...”

-- Rich Corozine, Daily Freeman

Mastronardo arrived in Ulster County in November 1972 with a BA as an art major from Hunter College. She studied with Marshall Glasier, John Hovannes and “received enlightment” from Jose de Creeft.

ROBERTO AZANK: STILLS
A solo show of still lifes and other floral compositions by the New Paltz-based, Argentinean artist
September 30 - October 22, 2017
Roberto Azank’s canvases convey a sense of hyper-reality through his bold use of color, precise line and controlled composition. His rendering of common objects such as flowers, fruits and curvaceous vessels set against the background of almost fauvist bisected bold color planes is being exemplified by superb draftsmanship.

KATIE GROVE: WOVEN SPACES

August 5 - 27, 2017

A desire to observe nature closely and share what she discovers is what drives Hudson Valley artist Katie Grove. Her perceptive drawings, etchings, and mixed-media sculptures highlight the unseen and intricate details of the natural world. From meticulous drawings of the hundreds of pieces in a bird’s nest, to woven sculptures, which ask the viewer to look closer, her work has a strong sense of exploration and storytelling. She takes the perspective of a naturalist and an artist, creating pieces that aim to be both scientifically accurate and imaginative.

The work in this exhibition spans several years of her career and includes her Language of the Nest series, recent work in basketry and woven sculptures, and a selection of watercolor paintings from her Medicine Feathers collection. All are inspired by natural

ELEKTRA BUHALIS: Articulture

May 13 - June 4, 2017

Elektra, who lives in High Falls, just a few doors down from Wired Gallery, has always been drawn to depicting the natural world. She's prolific in her ability to move from contemporary subject matter to her own renditions of early American primitive, creating a hybrid of schools which she refers to as ‘articulture’- a cross between art and agriculture.

She believes that in order for us to remember who we are as a unified people, we must return to a more elemental existence, one that reveres our natural habitats and the empowering work of reclaiming the relationship to our food supply. Elektra maintains a micro permaculture homestead, keeping bees, small livestock, and growing and preserving food.
